Reduless is a new product from Lallemand that was designed to correct negative VSCs (Voltatile Sulfur Compounds) such as H2S (hydrogen sulfide, A.K.A. "rotten egg") and DMS (dimethyl sulfide, A.K.A. "cooked corn") defects in wine. Made from inactivated yeast that have been infused with copper using a proprietary process, Reduless is a much gentler H2S remedy on the wine than the traditional copper sulfate (CuSO4) treatment alone. If you have an H2S problem, then we recommend treating it with Reduless first. However, if the sulfur problem still remains after the Reduless treatment, then a bench trial with copper sulfate (CuSO4) is recommended.

Note: The sooner you catch a sulfur problem the easier it is to deal with!

To Use:
Dissolve Reduless in 10 times it's weight in water and add immediately to the wine. Stir the wine gently to ensure a thorough homogenization. Rack or filter after 72 hours.

Recommended Dosage:
0.4-0.6 g/gal. The maximum amount of copper that can be released into the wine using Reduless at the recommended dosage is 0.02 ppm.

I believe I’m in the beginning stages of H2S and thought I’d give this a try before taking the dreadful step of using copper sulphate in my wine. Hopefully this Reduless does the trick

Interested in using this product in beer. I have had two fruited kettle sours in the past that developed H2S and this looks like something that could help. I am also intrigued that the description says the product will go after DMS. Are there issues using this product in beer? Thank you.
Mary McCloud on Aug 5, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Mary - as long as the product is used within the recommended dosage rates, there should be no issues using it in beer.

Improved wine
I used this product on 2 problem wines this year.
The first was a Pinot Noir Rose that had H2S, and either mercaptans, or disulfides also, so used a combination of ascorbic acid and copper sulfate to treat it. After this treatment I was still smelling some very slight cabbage like aromas which were muting the fruitiness. I used the Reduless and noticed more fruit and an improved nose. It had a more rounded mouth feel as the instructions mentioned.
The second problem wine was a Semillion.I lees aged it for 3 weeks and suddenly it developed some H2S. I racked it off the lees, but the smell of rotten egg persisted. I used Reduless on this wine and the bad nose was cured. Very impressed.

May want to add ascorbic acid to help
I had no aromatics on my viognier along with a sewage like smell. I added ascorbic acid, and then reduless. The results were amazing. A nice aroma returned, albeit somewhat light. Ascorbic Acid can potentially help by converting the disulfides (Can't break down with just Reduless) back to mercaptans (Which can be broken down).

Did the job
This stuff did what I needed. Used it in my wild ferment cider that got stinky. Now it's not stinky. What else can I say about a bag of tan powder? I should apologize to my brother for initially blaming the odor on him

It works!
...I think. I used about 3 oz of this per a 6 gal batch of cider that had a very sulfuric smell after fermenting. It did reduce the smell I believe, but what followed was sort of a butane / burnt odor. After the recommended 72 hrs. I racked and re-racked this between a bottling bucket and glass carboy with a splash guard funnel so as to allow the gasses to escape. I re-racked about eight times total and allowed the must to sit for a day or two. Lo and behold it was like a new brew! I sampled a taste and the offending odors were gone and I could taste the apple / cherry flavor clearly.

So, did the Reduless do the trick? Or was it racking and re-racking the must or both? I can't say for sure, but I will say that for less than $8 to save this batch is a no-brainer. And I have enough on hand to try it in my wine or cider should this issue reoccur.

Worked like a charm
We had a persistent rotten egg smell that would not fully diminish with racking, including racking through copper. Redulees removed the odor completely on the first application.

my fault, but...
The awful cider is my fault, because I made it. Sulfur smell was bad so I tried Reduless. Did it exactly per direction and it accomplished nothing. Racked it into a keg last night to carbonate and tasted some from the tube. I made 5 gallons of junk

We are sorry to hear about your bad experience with the cider and the Reduless. This stuff does have a limit on how much it can do to remove certain off flavors from a batch. For stronger problems with sulfur we recommend using copper sulfate or even copper scrub pads once the yeast is removed. We've had good success when using copper to scrub off sulfur when reduless isn't up for the job.

Reduless is a “Miracle Drug!”
As many have attested, this stuff is a miracle drug for that problem wine. Sewage smell disappeared overnight. Nip it in the bud. Don’t wait until you have a H2S problem. Buy this NOW so you’ll have it when you need it!

Brought back the fruit flavors masked by H2S in an insipid wine. Just follow the procedure and rack after the specified time.
