This is a 7.9 gallon plastic fermenter complete with lid, airlock, and spigot. These buckets are made from Polypropylene and are ideal for all types of fermentations, especially beers with high krausen.

Why Polypropylene?
These buckets are made from polypropylene as it is less porous and significantly smoother than other HDPE fermenters. HDPE is porous and can harbor microbial activity making it more difficult to clean and sanitize. Being less porous, polypropylene also does not absorb aroma like HDPE so there is less flavor carry over from batch to batch.
Kit Includes:
  • 7.9 gallon plastic bucket
  • Plastic lid with hole and grommet
  • Airlock
  • Spigot

Please note: some customers have noted in the reviews that when the spigot is fully threaded in, the barb end will be below the bottom of the bucket, which may require the bucket to be placed on a countertop or other raised surface, or angle the spigot to not point directly downward when not in use.

Please note: the spigot hole comes pre-molded into the bucket and needs to be drilled out before installing the spigot. We recommend using a 5/8" drill bit and taking care not to strip the female threads that accept the spigot. The spigot includes a back nut that won't be needed—simply remove the back nut and thread in the spigot with the gasket in between the neck of the spigot and the bucket. The lid forms a very tight seal and requires a decent amount of downward force to lock in place.

how do you install the spigot?
Gabriel Meza on Apr 24, 2020
BEST ANSWER: To install the spigot you will need to punch out the small piece of plastic on the bucket that is inside the threading for the spigot. Then you will want to apply some thread tape and screw the spigot in until it doesn't leak.
What is the diameter and height?
Jason Shaffer on Jun 24, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The approximate dimensions are: 15.75" Wide x 16.25" Tall
How do you punch out the small piece of plastic on the bucket that is inside the threading for the spigot? A video would be helpful. Thanks.
Michelle Edwards on Jun 28, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I used a step drill for mine. If you use a regular twist drill bit, it can grab when it finishes going through the last bit of the hole and possibly crack the thin wall of plastic around it. The step drill has a much less aggressive angle to the cutting edge so there was very little grabbing finishing the hole.
what are the dimensions of the bucket?
Frederick Grothkopp on Aug 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Don't forget the lid! And then plan ahead for airlock! My measurements (with lid) and WITHOUT airlock were about 17" high, and 16.5" wide... I tend to err on the side of "too big measurements" when using this hand-measuring tape.
what is the part number for a replacement lid?
Jeff Dahlseid on Feb 15, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hello Jeff, the part number is FE357B.
Lid for 7.9 gal Plastic Bucket (FE357A)
Lid for 7.9 gal Plastic Bucket (FE357A)
Do the buckets now come uncut? My previous order had the holes already but but there were some jagged pieces left and I'm concerned that those are becoming breeding grounds for contamination.
James Jacobson on Aug 23, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The bucket I received a couple months ago did not have the hole cut for the spigot. Off topic and may not be an issue for most but I did have to use a rubber mallet to get a good seal when putting the top cover on.
is the 30 L bucket semi translucent, or opaque like many of the white HDPE buckets?
Frank on Mar 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This bucket is definitely semi-translucent. I am using mine at the moment, and I can easily see the level of the liquid through the wall of the bucket. I like the bucket, but I keep it covered to keep the light out.
What temperature is the bucket rated for? This is the 7.9 gal polypropylene bucket.
Leland Brooks on Feb 8, 2021
BEST ANSWER: The maximum recommended operating temperature for polypropylene is 180°F (82.2°C). Beyond this temperature, the performance values of the material may be compromised.

Only downside I have is that you drill the spigot hole yourself. Otherwise it’s a great budget fermenter. Had the most vigorous fermentation so far in one of these. Will buy again if I need them.

Not a useless bucket with a hole after all
I was preparing to post a one star review and take some pictures of the spigot when I realized the “short” neck of the spigot wasn’t really a problem. It comes with a plastic nut for the end of the spigot, but the bucket itself has threading that will secure it without the need for the nut. I just spun around the rubber washer so it tapered into the bucket and screwed it into bucket itself. I used a 7/8” drill bit to open the hole too. If you used something larger you would cut out the internal threading in the bucket so use the right bit.

Don't waste your money or time
After drilling a hole for the spigot to go into the bucket I realized the spigot it came with is too short and does not fit through the hole far enough to use the nut to tighten it. Now I just have a bucket with a hole and loose fitting lid.

Worst homebrewing purchase ever
These buckets are terrible. The spigot strips way too easily and they leak like sieves. I wouldn't recommend these to anyone unless you feel like siliconeing the spigot in place.

Good Size BUT...
Very good size for a 5 gallon batch.
There are 2 problems with the bucket:
1- the lid is loose and doesn’t have any mechanism to tighten it on the bucket. My fear is fruit flies and ants and I ended up with piece of 3/4” plywood to weight the lid down and use other weights to uniformly put pressure on the lid. Drill a 1” hole in the center accommodate the bubbler. Designers should allow a partial twisting of the lid to firmly hold the lid down.

2- spigot doesn’t tighten correctly. It comes with a hex nut but the nut is for a different bucket design and is useless in this case.
Drill a smaller hole, dead center, and try not to damage the threads. Use plenty of Teflon tape. When completely tightened, spigot will not align vertically, so beware. I would have fired the designer who dreamed of this installation

3- if you position the spigot in vertical orientation the tip goes below the floor of the bucket. Now you have to raise the bucket on 2X4’s to keep the tip sanitary.

Other than these headaches, the bucket is ok, good quality and good size.

Great value
It is a great value since it comes complete with spigot and air lock. I would have given it 5 stars but the threading on the bucket wasn't water tight even after teflon tape. I was able to patch the hole with JB Weld Water Weld which is NSF 61 approved for drinking water. ( I work at a water treatment plant so I know this is safe). I then drilled a new hole in the bucket and installed the spigot. This worked great! My advice is to just not drill out the hole where it is threaded and drill a different hole for the spigot.

Good, could be slightly improved with better handles.
Very good. My only complaint is that the handles are somewhat sharp and should be filed down and molded thicker. Carrying this thing when full cuts into your hands more than similar products I have used.

Faucet threads don't fit properly, and are too loose to seal even with properly applied teflon tape. I ended up plugging it with a food-grade #5 stopper, sealing it with food-grade silicon adhesive, and drilling my own hole and installing a better faucet.

Only reason I didn't rate it lower is because it appears to be a quality food-grade bucket/lid, and with a little tweaking should work fine. That said, I would have saved a few bucks by just buying the bucket.
