Description

Paper Chromatograpy test kit used to tell if your malolactic fermentation has gone to completion. This information is essential knowledge for doing SO2 additions, cold stabilization, acid additions, etc on wines that have been innoculated with an ML strain or allowed to undergo natural malolactic fermentation. You will certainly want to know if ML has completed before bottling. Comes with 25 sheets, as many as 4 samples can be tested per sheet (must be tested simultaneously, sheets cannot be re-used).

I followed the instructions. Nothing happened. What did I do wrong? Three reference standards plus three wines on the blotter sheet. The only thing I can see (after exposing overnight and drying all day) is the two red wine blots a little higher than where I originally placed them.
Russ Brodeur on Nov 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It can take up to 24 hours for results to be visible depending on ambient temperature and humidity. It sounds as though you waited sufficient amount of time for development. Are the reference standards blots visible at varying heights on the developed test? Do your wine spots align approximately with the Tartaric acid standard blot? It sounds like you are not seeing any presence of malic or lactic acid? If your reagent blots are showing but you are not seeing any traces of these acids in your wine blots, then one can only assume you have minimal amounts of these acids present in your wine. In my experience the developing solution has an extremely long shelf life if capped tightly.
What volume of developer is included in this ML test kit?

Good Deal
The 25 pages, 8.4 oz of developer and the three acid standards in this kit were a much better deal than replacing these items by themselves as needed from my local winemaking supplier.

Very Pleased with Test Kit
I used the test kit on two wines right after I received it. I followed the instructions provided and the results on the Chromatogram came out great! I was hoping to find that the malolactic fermentation was complete but it wasn’t , but it’s better to know for sure whether it’s complete or not!

Worked as expected
Fairly easy to use, directions were a little unclear but after reading through them a couple of times it made sense. Otherwise, worked great and confirmed MLF had been completed!

Great product.
This is a well designed kit that is easy to use and has a clear set of directions. As an extra control I added a sample of a nice Cotes du Rhone that I happened to be drinking and as expected it showed a complete ML fermentation. My wine, alas, had not fully completed ML fermentation to I have a bit more work to do.

Great product
Easy to use and results were very accurate. Honestly the easiest part of the winemaking process when compared to sulfite and pH management. Always use in a well ventilated area

Packaging
This seems to work much better than the Vinmetrica system i recently bought and is less expensive. It works well. The Chromatography paper is packaged inside the bottle and is quite hard to remove. Perhaps consider shipping the paper separate from the bottle?

paper chromatography test kit
My test results came out pretty much like the kit sample sheet. However, development was slower perhaps due to cooler weather. I left the test sheet hanging in my garage overnight before the colors were plain to see. Afterwards, there was still a bit MLF in the wine, or perhaps it was a random spontaneous fermentation. CONCLUSION I think it is a worthwhile gauge of malolactic fermentation completion in wine, certainly better than guessing by staring at tiny bubbles. I plan on using this kit on my future wines.
