Description

A great chilling solution for those homebrewers who are stuck with warm tap water.

If you live in a hot environment where the tap water never really gets cold, it can be helpful to pre-chill your water before you even begin chilling your wort. This Pre-Chiller from MoreBeer! is designed to bring your tap water down to below the final target temperature for your wort.

The Pre-Chiller is made up of 25 feet of copper tubing that is placed in a bucket of ice water. The in-flow is connected to the source of your tap water, while the other side is connected to your wort chiller. Once it’s all connected, you can quickly and efficiently cool your water before it even enters the wort chiller.

The Pre-Chiller is equipped with brass hose fittings that can be attached to any standard garden hose. It is designed to use with our 6 gallon buckets.

Specifications:
  • 25 feet of 1/2 inch copper tubing.
  • Female Garden hose inlet, Male Garden hose outlet.
  • Approx. 10" diameter, 7" to the top coil, 24" to the bend to go over the lip of the bucket.

Insufficient
Ran it with 20# of ice and water and made almost no difference in temp despite using 1/2” water hose so the flow rate was not unreasonable.

Good product
I purchased this for multiple uses; my buddy has one that he uses for pre-chilling and I plan to do the same thing once I get my brewstand back up and running to pre-chill my water before it goes into the plate chillers (in Arizona so water isn't always cool enough). However, I realized that these also fit my keggles perfectly due to the long neck, so am using as an immersion chiller in the interim right now. With 5 gallon batches in the brew keggle it has a pretty good coverage and although it may take longer than I am used to, is doing a good job. Note that I have also used my buddy's setup with this as a pre-chiller and it definitely cuts down the chill time in our warmer climate than without it.

Just not enough
I live in California and I'm on a well, so the water sits in tanks under the hot sun meaning my water out of the tap can get pretty warm. I hook the garden hose to the pre-chiller sitting in a bucket of ice water. The output then goes to my immersion chiller. The pre-chiller by itself isn't enough to cool the water in my case. The ice in the bucket melts really fast, and it takes way too long to cool down the wort in 10-gallon batches. What I do now it run a pump from the bottom of the swimming pool where the water is still cool and makes a big difference.

Great add on to brewery
When I stepped up to 10 gallon batches, my standard wort chiller just didn't cut it. I got this and put it in a bucket with ice water and it gets the job done.
