The future is here today, and the future is HDPE Fermentation & Storage Tanks from Speidel.

Are you tired of carboys? Hate siphoning to transfer? Wish you could ferment larger batches in a single container? Sick of lifting 50lbs by a small metal handle? Done with worrying about shattered glass, injury and lost product? Well then have we got the solution for you!

These heavy duty plastic tanks offer a fantastic fermentation & storage solution at a great price.

Key Features:

  • Heavy duty HDPE construction is durable and resists oxygen transfer. None of the risks of working with glass.
  • Small footprint makes them easy to store - take better advantage of the space you have to dedicate to wine & beer making.
  • Built-in handles make these tanks easy to move, even when full.
  • Large lid opening makes them easy to clean by hand - say goodbye to your carboy brush!
  • All ports seal with gaskets and the vessel can be fully sealed for long-term storage.
  • Includes a spigot, airlock and stopper.
  • Designed and manufactured in Germany by Speidel, the makers of our legendary commercial wine tanks

Suggested Applications:

  • 12L: Perfect for storing small lots and experimental batches or taking some of your beer or wine along with you to your next party.
  • 20L: Ideal for secondary fermentation and storage of 5 gallon batches.
  • 30L: The vessel for fermenting wine kits and 5 gallon batches of beer with plenty of headspace and no need for a blowoff tube.
  • 60L: Perfect for fermenting larger batches of wine or 10 gallon batches of beer in a single container! Only 4" larger in diameter than a 6.5 gallon carboy!
  • 120L: Ferment & Store large batches of anything - your creativity is the only limit!

Approximate Dimensions: 10in Diameter x 14in Height (w/out airlock in place). Note - The maximum temperature that these plastic fermenters can handle is 140F.

I'm interested in the blow off tube assembly shown in the picture of the comment from Dennis K. (July 5th). What are those white plastic elbow connectors attached to the grommet on the Speidel that he's using for his blow off tube assembly?
Maurice Hajjar on Aug 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hello Maurice - They look to be push-in fittings for RO water filtration systems. Similar to a larger SharkBite fitting. Search John Guest fittings.
Has anyone tried a speidel plastic fermentor to make Kombucha?
Charles D. Coskery on Mar 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I own 5 of these fermenters from Speidel and have used them for beer and wine multiple times. I’m sorry I haven’t used them to make Kombucha, however; these vessels are made of food grade (HDPE) so I would recommend them for any liquid you wish to ferment and consume. I not certain but I’m pretty sure you can use these with liquid up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit without any issues or concerns with off flavors or melting plastic. Hope this helps. I highly recommend these fermenters.
What is the tubing size for the spigot on the Speidel fermentor?
Jeffrey Hewit on Sep 11, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hello Jeffrey, 3/8'' tubing will provide a snug fit on the spigot. You can use 1/2'' but you'll want to use a hose clamp to secure the line.

Sturdy fermenter with one drawback
I really like this fermenter. I love how sturdy it is. I also really like the handle. The only drawback is that since it’s so thick and sturdy it’s hard to get the temperature of the liquid inside. I’m still looking at options which may include having to drill into it.

These are my favorite fermenters. The 12 liter is perfect for 3 gallon all grain brew in the bag. Also great for splitting 5 gallon batches and experimenting. I have a 3 gallon fast ferment and prefer the speidel

Great piece of equipment. Hands down better than the old school five gallon bucket. Love the German engineering.

Buy it here and you'll get the airlock and pre-drilled lid included
I already own the 7.9 gallon model and love it so getting this was a no brainer for splitting batches down in size. I used this to add puree to an IPA and it worked wonderful. Hard to go wrong with the Speidel in my opinion.

You might be able to find these cheaper elsewhere but most other venders only sell them as storage containers and not as fermenters. Moorebeer included the airlock and pre-drilled lid whereas others only have a sealed lid so you'll end up needing to purchase accessories from the cheaper guys and it will cost similar so buying it all together in a package is a better way to go if you don't want to guess on accessories.

Great vessel - have 2
Love this size. Just wish the lid came equipped with a siphon port. Customizing them myself didn't go smoothly. But I prefer the smaller size for smaller batches.

Fermenter, yes!
I previously purchased a 30L Speidel Fermenter and love it! Recently, I realized I had the perfect spot in the my beer refrigerator/freezer for a half batch fermenter and ordered a 12L Speidel. As its name indicates, the 12L is designed for storage and travel, but with a 1/2" hole drilled in its top, an air lock grommet may be easily installed. Because of little headroom above 2.5+ gallons in the Speidel and because I didn't have room for a typical air lock, I decided to use a blow off setup instead. Works great! I recommend the Speidel plastic fermenters ... very well made, lots of accessories available, easy on the wallet and fun to use!

Great Product. Bad Spigots.
When I received two of these for Christmas I was so excited to use them! Then, while sanitizing, I noticed that the spigots leaked no matter how tight or loose I screwed them on. I followed the directions and, despite multiple attempts, could not get them to seal properly.

I'm sure Speidel makes great stuff. However, these carboys are being sent back. If it does not work, it does not belong in my home brewery. Sorry Speidel, looks like I'm staying with PET carboys for now.

Have 3 of Them
As others have pointed out, it is very easy to drill a hole in the lid for a grommet. The one drawback is that the handle is rendered useless if you use an airlock. These are nice little fermentors for stove-top or counter-top BIAB batches. My one major con for this product is the HDPE tends to hold onto smells (wort smells and fusel alcohols) and it discolors with time, if you brew darker beers. One thing I noticed is the carryover of those wort odors into other lighter beers. Buckets will do the same thing over time; I guess I was hoping for so much more when considering the price of these vs a bucket. I have since switched to a similar size, glass, wide mouth fermentor due to the staining and retention of odors.
