Many home brewers prefer using plate chillers to cool their wort, mainly because they’re relatively small size and excellent efficiency. If you think that a plate chiller is right for you, you might want to consider the Shirron Plate Wort Chiller from MoreBeer! This compact chiller features 11 stainless steel plates fused together with copper solder, creating an incredibly durable base that is truly made to last.

This chiller features small channels that weave their way across the surface of each of the 11 plates, creating more surface area for the wort to travel over in order to cool it down more thoroughly. There are two ½ inch male pipe threads for the wort inlet and outlet, while the water in and out is a ¾ inch male garden hose thread.

Using a plate chiller requires  thorough cleaning. Most brewers recommend back flushing the chiller immediately after use.

12.5" long, 3" wide, and 2" thick.

Inlet/outlet placement might limit connection options
I love it because it’s small, and I hate it because it’s small. Performance-wise, I have no complaints. It does it’s job as well as expected, albeit a little slow, but hey, it’s a small chiller with not as much surface area as others. My biggest complaint is the placement of the inlets/outlets. I like that the inlets/outlets are just simply 1/2 mpt and 3/4 garden hose thread. I thought that this would give me options on the type of connections I could use. But, since the inlets/outlets are placed so close together, those options I thought I would have were diminished a considerable amount. I would have liked to used a 1.5 TC, but no chance of that happening. I did end up with a set of ss quick disconnects, which is ok, but not quite what I originally wanted. That being said, it does work, and it’s small. That’s what I was after in the first place.

Hi Gary - Great review! You may have some luck getting 3/4" TCs to fit.

pretty good if wort is filtered
bought this and tried to like it however, if there are any hops particles it plugged right away.

Overall Good
Works great. This chiller has less cooling capability than most so a valve to slow down the flow of the wort is crucial to get the desired final wort temperature.

If you're serious about brewing; and who isn't.... get this plate chiller
I've been brewing for about 7 years and still used the immersion stainless coils I bought when I started. Folks, I gotta tell you; this plate chiller will change your life. You'll be happier, you'll quit snapping at co-workers, you may even become a nicer person. Plus.... the chill time drops like a rock. 10 minutes... 15 tops for a 5 gallon batch.
Don't forget the pump...

Sturdy, super effective, and very easy to clean; back flushing, and running a CIP loop with hot water and PBW for 30 minutes gets the job done.

Great chiller, good value
I got this for XMas last year and it's really nice to have. I previously used an immersion chiller which I fabricated myself. It worked OK, but this thing works much better.

This time of year my groundwater comes out at about 65F, and I had my wort down below 100F in less than 10 minutes...nice!!!

Worked great
I love using this over a my immersion chiller. I chill 5 gallons and the wort goes from my kettle at 200 degrees into my fermenter at under 70 degrees, just have to tweak the flow a little to get it just right. One my best homebrewing purchases.
