The original Double IPA! Vinnie Cilurzo began homebrewing in 1989 while in college. In 1994 Vinnie started the Blind Pig Brewing Company in Temecula, CA, a small, low-budget mico-brewery known for their extremely hoppy IPA - an IPA which won silver medals at both the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup. Vinnie sold his share in Blind Pig and was hired to manage and brew at the Russian River Brewing Company, a start-up brewery by Korbel Champagne in Guerneville, CA. In late 2002 Korbel decided to get out of the beer business and sold the Russian River name and brand to Vinnie who is moving the brewery to Santa Rosa, CA, 90 miles North of San Francisco, where he and his wife Natalie are opening a brew-pub which will serve homemade pizza and, of course, all of the Russian River Ales. Vinnie has won 10 awards at the Great American Beer Festival in the past six years and was named Small Brewing Company Brewmaster of the Year in 1999. Almost every beer that Vinnie makes commercially started out as a homebrew recipe at one point or another. Even as a professional brewer, Vinnie still homebrews at least 5 or 6 times a year.

This is the original homebrew recipe that was the basis for Blind Pig IPA which won Silver Medals at the World Cup of Beer and the Great American Beer Festival in 1996, the last year Vinnie brewed it. Two 'dry hop' additions along with 1 oz of American Oak are added directly to the fermenter after the first week of fermentation. To say it is a very unique, extremely flavorful IPA is an understatement. Vinnie recommends using White Labs California yeast, WLP001.

I picked this because I have made it before. I have tweaked some of the ingredients to make it better or just as good.

Made the Black Butte Porter, need something hoppy! Also, just moved to Oakland from PA, not familiar with LHBS so kits are a helpful way to keep brewing by getting everything together at once.

Great, easy drinking IPA
Tastes great and has a nice finish. Not overly hoppy but has enough of a hop punch to fully enjoy this one. Definitely would order this one again.

A 6 pack is $40ish, this is cheaper! LOL
Discover the origins of one of the best "west coast IPA's", I leave out the oak chips just for my personal preference. Simple recipe, easy to brew, best recommendation is to make sure you have some ability to do temp control, try not to ferment too warm.

Not as hoppy as i expected it to be. Good taste but I had better IPAs from MoreBeer.

I would not brew this again, just my opinion.
It's a good IPA, not great, I've had much better IPA's from Morebeer.

Good Kit, Repeat order
Tried this 5 gallon AG kit a little while back, came out great using the recommended WLP001 yeast. Had to order 2 more kits as the 5 gallon batch I kegged didn't last very long.

oaky ipa flavor
Brewed this in March 2015 and tasted it after 1 week and then again after 2 weeks from bottling. I did the all grain version. Used a glass 5 gallon carboy for 2 weeks for secondary and also dry hop. One this that was different about this kit was the oak chips. You can really taste the oak chips in this IPA. It tastes very balanced and different from other IPAs. Slwoly the oak flavor started to go away after about 3 weeks. Doesn't taste like the Bling Pig IPA from Russian River but it is a good IPA for more experienced drinkers. I've had mixed reviews with friends and families about this home brew..

Couldn't get it right
I recently upgraded my rig to a 20 gallon direct fire recirculating mash tun on a single-tier, HEPA filter aeration, fermentation temperature control, and CO2-flushed filtering. As a result, I decided to use this kit to "grind" until I got the hang of the new setup. I brewed it five times altogether.

The first couple of batches were a great learning experience; I got good at holding my mash temperature and improved my yeast handling a little. After that the next three batches were consistent, but never had the flavor I was looking for. It wasn't unclean, but it did feel muddledwhich is the opposite of what I like about the commercial version of Blind Pig. I'm moving on to the Citra IPA kit and the recipes I've put together myself in the past, and won't come back to this kit.

Solid American IPA
Brewed this using the BIAB technique, I crushed my own grain (very fine) and ended up with an OG of 1.080 - fermented a month and yielded a FG 1.016, stronger than average beer. I oaked and dry hopped about 8 days. Nice creamy white head and orang color, great floral bouquet, on the bad side two 20 oz beers knock me out.

I had a mishap with the oak, heated in the micro and cracked the container while cooling it to handel - this resulted in my using about 1/2 the oak. As a result the oak is not very pronounce, but once you make it through the hops there is a layer of complexity...

Will brew again, but will aim for a 6% -ish beer, not my current 8%+ bruiser.
