Heretics Shallow Grave® Robust Porter - All Grain Beer Brewing Kit (5 Gallons)

Please select from the following option(s) to see pricing and availability.

Dark as night, the Shallow Grave Porter is the perfect beer choice for a cool, dark evening. This a big Porter with complex flavors of rich chocolate and caramel followed by a touch of warmth and a light malt sweetness that will leave you ready for the next shovelful.

When we say big, we mean big as this beer starts with a whopping 15lbs of malt. The complex malt flavors come from a blend of Munich, Black Patent, Chocolate, and Crystal malts. Cascade and Columbus hops provide a firm backbone yet a subdued hop flavor.

This BrewMasters Series kit comes from Jamil Zainasheff who owns Heretic Brewing and is also a Brewing Network podcaster.  Before he went pro he won the California Homebrewer of the Year award twice, the national Ninkasi award for the best homebrewer in country, and hundreds of other brewing awards.  He has been a MoreBeer! customer and friend since the 1990's. One of his favorite styles of beer is Porter and he continued to perfect this recipe over many years.

This is the best porter I've brewed. It continues to improve after one and a half years in bottle. I will keg this batch.

Seemed like a good option for my first Porter to brew. I really like Porters as the weather starts to cool off.

Really enjoyed it, would brew again
Well balanced, def recommend the imperial flagship yeast for some nice English ale notes.

Excellent Porter
Brewed this with WLP001 California Ale carbed at 11 PSI with a 6' line at 40F. I made one deviation from the original recipe by adding an aditional 1lb of flaked oats to add more body. The beer came out fantastic and is one of my favorites. The color is a deep black, the aroma that of coffee and chocolate and the flavor of roasted coffee with a smooth creamy finish.

Not bad
Very good porter. I did have to cut the hops way back. If you add the hops the recipe calls for it comes in aound 70 something IBUs. That seemed a little high for a porter. Overall good beer.

Great Beer for Only 2 Weeks
Second time I've made this and it's truly a great beer for only 2 weeks fermentation. Now that I have a keg and don't have to bottle condition I'm drinking the brew in only 2 weeks. The kit clearly states yeast must be ordered but does not say anything about the Whirlfloc Tablet, so I ordered a pack for nothing.

Very nice porter, didn't hop as called for
Really loved this beer, but when I was looking around on the net it was suggested to use .5 and 1.5 oz's of hops rather then 1 & 2 oz. Took this suggestion & if I did this again I would do it exactly the same!

Taste more like a brown ale
Maybe it was my brewing procedure but this beer did not come out like a porter at all. I’m rather disappointed not bad but nothing like a porter.

Great beer. It keeps getting better with age. Unfortunately my first batch is almost gone and haven’t had time to make the round.

Very Enjoyable.
I'm near the end of my keg of this kit, and I've got to say, it's been a really solid, easy-drinking porter. The aroma is of powdered cocoa, and the taste is sweetness with underlying chocolate and roast. I usually like more chocolate and black malt bite in my porters, so I'll adjust the recipe next time. But the kit as it stands makes a really good beer. Highly recommend.

A few notes:
1. I adjusted the bittering charge and flavor hop addition to .5 oz Columbus, and 1.5 oz Cascade respectively. The kit instructions list something like 35 IBU, and if you use the hops they give you, it'll produce a much more bitter beer.
2. The chocolate malt comes from Hugh Baird. I find a fairly large discrepancy between chocolate malts from different maltsters.
3. I put this beer on cask, and the creamy mouthfeel that comes from that really accentuated the malt flavors.

Black as coal
Very dark and robust porter. I haven't compared it to the commercial version, but it turned out great. My friends and beer club peers loved it. More than one said it was "one of the best porters I've ever had."
