Very basic, not as helpful as How to Brew
While the original classic, and helpful for the very basics, this book left me with many questions when I first started brewing years ago. I later got How to Brew and felt it covered all the same important points and then more, and more clearly.

A must for every starting brewer...
Learning to brew almost 20 years ago, I didn't have much to choose from in the way of reading material. Charlie was there with this book and back issues of Zymurgy which I ready 3 and 4 times apiece.
Over the years, I've bought at least a dozen copies of this book and handed it out to people I've taught to brew, in the hopes that it brought them as much good brewing, as it brought me.
Is it perfect? Nah. But then again, Charlie never tried to be...that was his point. Brewing is about enjoying yourself and your friends, and if you take it too seriously, you ruin it.
His writing style has personality. It's not a chemistry book...there are plenty of brewing books that give you that. This is a collection of brewing instruction and recipes, told with a good dose of humor.
It's my opinion that brewing starter kits should contain this from the get-go.

Inspiring
Papazian is one of homebrweing's best writers who brings his passion to every word. A spirit of innovation, authenticity, and enthusiasm animates the whole book, which will inspire your to brew. I have been brewing for nine years and this is the book I recommend to everyone for their first look in to brewing.

Be aware that it's not the most technical or complete homebrewing book (for that, John Palmer's "How to Brew"). In my opinion it's still the best for approaching recipe development and getting into the artistic side of the hobby. This book is great for helping you take risks, learning from them and reminding you that when your beer is not what you wanted, it's still beer. Even if you follow the recipes, you quickly learn that even recipes allow room for interpretation and choice on the brewer's part (Many of his recipes call for some thing like "half an ounce of x, y or z hops") and he provides a useful tables for the scheme to produce many classic beer styles. After this book, I recommend looking into Ray Daniel's "Designing Great Beer", which is not introductory, but excellent for intermediate guidance in recipe formulation and Chris White and Jamil Zainisheff's "Yeast", which covers the most important aspect of consistent good brewing, fermentation.

Very good starter book
Not quite as good as Palmer's "How to Brew" it never the less is a great starter book. Relaxing to read, it will get you started. The author doesn't just tell you what to do, he explains why you should do it that way. Lots of recipes to try.

Relax, Don't worry, Have a home brew
This book is a must have for every home brewer enthusiast. From hops, water, yeast, barley, wheat and many different adjuncts, this book gives a humorous approach to home brewing with the mantra of Relax, don?t worry, have a home-brew?. I personally found the description of how yeast is able to convert sugars into alcohol informative and more importantly, how the different mash temperatures impact the ability of the yeast to convert those sugars into alcohol. Who does not want to easily understand this process and many more complex brewing techniques from DME, Extract to partial mash to all grain brewing? You will find this book is one that you will read over and over again. Plus there are many, many different recipes to use from many different styles. So, Relax, Don?t worry, Have a home brew?, and enjoy this book. Cheers!
