With this complete kit you'll be ready to use the Blow Tie Spunding Valve right out of the box. The BlowTie is used to release excess pressure on a pressurized fermenter or from a receiving keg during pressure transfers. This diaphragm spunding valve is much more accurate than the spring and poppet style, and works much better at lower pressures.
Pressure fermentation is becoming more and more popular at the homebrew level, but in order to do it safely and accurately, you need a way to release excess pressure. You'll pressurize your vessel to your desired psi, but once fermentation begins and those hungry, active yeast start creating CO2, the pressure inside the vessel will increase. Attach a spunding valve and set it to your desired pressure, and it will blow off when the pressure gets to high and close up again when it's back to your desired psi.
Even if you don't have a pressurizable fermenter, you may have done pressure transfers from keg to keg during filtering or after fining. During pressure transfers, it's a good idea to have a bit of head pressure in the receiving keg, especially if you're transferring beer that is already carbonated. Having a spunding valve in place will allow you to consistently control the head pressure and give you more consistent results, without losing carbonation in the process.
Diaphragm vs. Poppet
With the poppet style spunding valve, a spring pushes against a poppet to keep the valve closed. When the poppet lifts up to open, the surface area the gas pushes against becomes larger, and the spring has to work harder to push the poppet down and reseal the valve. This can lead to more gas being released than intended, and the remaining pressure in your vessel may be at a lower psi than your spunding valve’s set psi.
Instead of a poppet, the spring inside the BlowTie pushes against a diaphragm, which has an immensely larger surface area. This means the surface area that the gas pushes against while the diaphragm is closed is significantly closer to the surface area it pushes against when the diaphragm is open. This leads to higher accuracy, and the remaining pressure after excess gas is released will be much closer to your set blow off pressure.
Why is my pressure fluctuating wildly? I set my psi to 10 on a clean corny keg before I started pressure fermentation. The last 2 days it’s been a nightmare. Randomly up to 30psi, blow outs through the spunding valve, it’s been a bad first experience that’s for sure
The spunding valve came pre-assembled from MoreBeer. It worked perfectly once I figured out that the regulator had been installed backwards and would not bleed pressure no matter how much the pressure adjuster was turned out. That could've resulted in severe over-pressurization of the beer and fermenter. MoreBeer needs to tighten-up their quality control or someone could get hurt, or worse yet, ruin a perfectly good batch of beer!
Since the package that I received did not come with instructions and was assembled incorrectly, I would highly recommend going to YouTube and watch the assembly and use instructions. I also recommend purchasing additional 8 mm or 5/16 of tubing to help with the pressure settings. You will be glad you did.
Did my brewing using my Fermzilla for the second time. Put this on and away we go. Fermentation starts and I try adjusting this one way and the other and it isn't venting. I'm starting to worry as it's a Monday and MoreBeer is closed. Ended up getting a (newer?) replacement at another shop and it works great. When I watched the vid on this they were explaining how to assemble it. Mine was assembled when I got it. Did some looking at it and it would appear that the diaphragm on the end was attached with the flow indicator backward. I'll return it and get another recipe kit. 3 star for it not working but not lower as the new one from the same vendor seems to work just fine.
Great product, would have given 5 stars except for a couple issues
So far it works good, mine came in a different configuration than shown above, which worries me if I’m filling a keg and foam gets in the line and could get into the gauge. I don’t know how those fittings work so I haven’t reoriented the gauge. Also the gauge has slipped out causing gas leak.
Kind of a pain in the *** to set up. You have to make fine adjustments throughout the span of a day until you get it set to your desired PSI. AT first it wasn't working at all but I gave it a good bump and the diaphragm stopped sticking. The set screw is pretty short so setting it to 10 PSI was almost at the end of the threads. Overall it worked ok.
Works mechanically great, just have to make extra certain to make your connections are secure, as lateral force on the tubing from the gauge and gravity can cause leaks if extra care is not taken to secure them.

Very easy to use...even for a beginner like me.
I'm using this on the fermzilla and it's very easy to hold 12PSI while fermenting. This item does NOT include the extra tubing you will need in order to connect this item to a container full of cleaning solution so I highly recommend you purchase 5-6 feet of EVABarrier 8mm OD tubing (either 4ID or 5.5ID will be fine).
Simply dial in the max pressure and listen for the faint hiss of escaping gas. Exactly what I wanted it to do while doing a fermenter to keg transfer. Keeps the head pressure from building up and stopping the flow of beer.
Very pleased, I added a couple feet of tubing between the "t" and the quick connect. Accurate and stable so far. The yellow pressure adjustment screw is very touchy, it's accurate and effective but a slight bump or brush off the sleeve could easily rotate it out of calibration.
This works just as advertised. It is better than the spring and poppet style. Air flow is easy to hear letting you know flow is coming through. I was able to perfectly dial in the pressure I wanted and it held that pressure without any problems.
I used the unit in conjunction with the automatic flow stopper when pressure transferring carbonated beer from my unitank.
