Description

The Blichmann AutoSparge is extremely helpful when sparging or recirculating your mash. Designed to regulate the flow of liquid being allowed onto the top of your grain bed. If the floating ball is all the way down, the flow rate will increase. As the ball begins to rise with the liquid level, the flow rate slows down, preventing an overflow. Simple, yet effective! Requires at least a 12" inner diameter kettle, keg, or cooler. Includes 18" of silicone tubing and foam tubing float ring.

Installation requires a 13/16" mounting hole. Max 10 psi; cannot accommodate city/well water pressure.

Good product. A couple of areas of concern.
The auto- sparge works as described. I wish you could order it with the specific length sparge arm that you needed. Better yet, have adjustment for the length (ie clap on extendable float arm). The arm it came with was too long for my FF 5 gal batch mash tun cooler. Secondly, it would be nice to have something to support the auto sparge in the wall of the cooler. There is a fair amount of movement at the point of attachment. The FF cooler has a thin inner wall. This may lead to failure of the wall of the mash tun with time.

Blichmann Sparge Arm
Great product, but should have come with an one additional longer sparge arm, an additional float for the tubing, and approximately 24 inches of additional tubing. I had to order all of the above in order to get it to work properly on my 14 gallon mash tun.

somewhat works
It works but it leaks around the plunger so it doesn't shut off the flow and causes my sparge to go quicker than I'd like.

Meh...
I've really tried to like Blichmann gear over the years. I've had the plate chiller, a kettle, a burner and this. They all carry a premium price tag and honestly, I've found every one of them to be lacking in too many ways to be deserving of that price tag.

In the case of the AutoSparge, the only thing I can say good about it is that the float valve works well enough that as long as you don't do anything drastic like bump your MLT too hard it will keep you from having to manually adjust flow from the HLT. If you do happen to bump your kettle, get ready to watch the wave create more waves which create more from the valve flapping. If you don't reach in and grab the float to stop the flow you'll end up with a completely unsettled grain bed.

While you have it running, you do have to have considerable flow from your pump providing a fair amount of pressure otherwise it draws air at the valve that runs down the line with the mash. This causes hot side aeration if during your lautering which is something we all try to avoid. But if you put too much pressure or don't have the exact correct amount of hose sticking out of the float you WILL move your grain bed and also aerate your mash regardless of if you're lautering or sparging as it will have enough lateral pressure to pick up grains and move them around on the other side from the flow.

Honestly, I'm not sure how there are this many good reviews for this product. I'm guessing either they've all been lucky, I have some sort of a unique setup that really just doesn't like Blichmann products or they aren't noticing these problems for one reason or another.

Don't Love The Autosparge
I bought one of these and found myself going back to my homemade sparge manifold. The design and idea of the unit is great as is everything with Blichmann, but I think you can save yourself some money and go buy some cpvc pipe drill some holes in it and use a valve on your HLT to control the flow.

fits perfectly in my 8 gallon mash fun pot
Took me a few trys to dial it in my system but is easy to adjust on the fly there after. Solid construction and is all stainless steel now.

WORK SMART NOT HARD
Why take all the time trying to set a pair of ball valves to flow just right ? With this you can set it and forget it. Makes my brew day a whole lot more pleasant !

Great Once Adjusted Properly
I have used the auto sparge twice now, and it works great. Allows me to keep the lid closed on the Mashtun to keep heat in and focus on the run off! Would recommend.
